Does your Google Business Profile affect AI answers?
Short answer
For local questions, yes. It's one of the most important inputs, especially for Google's own AI features, which draw on the same business information that powers Google Maps. Other assistants use their own map and listing sources, so your Google profile matters a lot but isn't the whole story.
Why it matters so much
When someone asks "who's a good plumber near me?" an AI assistant needs facts it can trust: what you do, where, when you're open, and what customers think. Your Google Business Profile is a structured, verified source for all of that, which makes it easy for AI to use.
Google doesn't publish exactly how its AI uses profiles, so treat the checklist below as good practice rather than a formula. Everything on it also helps your regular Google Maps results.
What AI can learn from your profile
- Categories: the clearest signal of what kind of business you are.
- Services and description: the specifics that match a customer's question.
- Service area and hours: whether you're a fit for this customer right now.
- Reviews: the words customers use to describe you, which AI often repeats.
The 10-point checklist
- Claim and verify your profile. An unverified profile can be edited by others.
- Use your real business name, exactly as it appears on your sign and website. Adding keywords to your name breaks Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended.
- Choose the most specific primary category, then add secondary categories for other main services.
- Fill in your services list with a short description for each.
- Write a clear description whose first sentence says what you do, who you serve, and where.
- Set your service area by the towns or counties you actually serve. Hide your address if you work from home.
- Keep hours current, including holiday and seasonal hours.
- Ask for reviews regularly and reply to every one.
- Add real photos of your work, team, and location.
- Match everything to your website and other listings: name, phone, address, hours, services.
Don't stop at Google
Different AI assistants pull from different sources. Claim and match your listings on Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, and Yelp too, plus the directories that matter in your industry. Consistency across all of them is what builds AI's confidence in your details.
Common mistakes
- Two profiles for the same business, often an old one nobody deleted.
- A phone number that differs between your profile and your website.
- A generic category like "Contractor" when a specific one fits better.
- No replies to reviews, especially negative ones.
